Working with Trading Standards
Since 1988, when Trading Standards Officers were
given the power to seize illegal videos and, more recently, DVDs, the
BBFC has been providing evidence to help Local Authority Trading
Standards Officers secure convictions.
In 2000, the BBFC checked 1289 actual videos or
DVDs (works) and 9917 titles. Since 1988 the Board has supplied
evidence for almost 18,000 works and over 58,000 titles.
Any Trading Standards Officer who wants to check
whether a video or DVD has been given a BBFC classification, or to
check whether the version facing possible prosecution is the same as
the version classified by the BBFC, can contact the Board on 020 7440
1585.
The BBFC does not charge for this service, the cost being factored into the fee for video classification.
The BBFC will provide a Certificate of Evidence
under Section 19 of the Video Recordings Act 1984. This is admissible
in Court as ‘stand alone’ evidence and does not require
anyone from the BBFC to attend as a witness.
The Board’s website lists every title which
the Board has ever classified and provides a quick means of checking
out a particular title.
